Grasscutters are unique animals...
They are the second largest rodent in Africa second only to the porcupine. Grasscutters are more related to the porcupine than to your everday rat since it belongs to the Hystricomorpha (porcupine family).
Here are 6 Amazing facts about Grasscutters...
1. GRASSCUTTERS ARE COPROPHAGIC:
Coprophagy is performed by rodents and lagomorphs and to a lesser degree by piglets, foals, dogs and nonhuman primates. Due to the construction of the digestive system of rodents and rabbits, coprophagy is necessary to supply many essential nutrients. Bacterial synthesis of nutrients occurs in the lower gastrointestinal tract in these animals where little absorption is realized. The eating of their feces provides a method for obtaining these nutrients.
2. GRASSCUTTERS ARE PRECOCIAL:
Grasscutters are born ready. They are born fully haired with open eyes and are capable of following their mother immediately after birth. They also can start eating grasses few hours after birth. Not a lot of Animals have this ability.
3. GRASSCUTTERS DON'T CLIMB
We have a saying in Igbo language that says...
"Oji akwu nye Nchi na Nchi ada ari enu."
It translates to "anybody with Palm kernel nut should give Grasscutter because Grasscutters don't climb. Grasscutter cannot climb but they can jump.
4. GRASSCUTTERS DON'T BURROW:
A lot of people think Grasscutters dig...
No they don't.
In the wild they live in holes dug & abandoned by other animals.
5. GRASSCUTTER LITTER UP TO 15 CUTLINGS IN CAPTIVITY
I used to think that they could only give birth to around 8 children.
I was shocked when I got a video from one of my students that his Grasscutter gave birth 15 cutlings. I believe that with a purposeful research we can improve their abilities to replicate this ability on demand.
6. GRASSCUTTER IS A WHITE MEAT:
Grasscutter is one of the favourite white meats doctors recommend. White meat is a leaner source of protein, with a lower fat content.
The downside to eating red meats are those related to the amount of fat, cholesterol, and sodium content. These risk factors bring an increase rise in heart disease, such as heart attacks and clogged arteries.
High sodium content in red meats can lead to high blood pressure. High blood pressure is a condition where long-term force of blood against artery walls is forceful enough to cause heart disease. There is also an increased risk of stroke, a stroke is when blood flow to a part of the brain stops. Lastly heart failure, which is the hearts inability to properly pump an adequate supply of blood throughout the body.
